Buying Used Cars in Egypt

  • Learn About the Information and Necessary Steps for Buying the Best Used Cars in Egypt

Used cars are a good option for many people, as they cost about half the price of new cars, and the price of a new car decreases significantly after a few years of purchase. The prices of used cars in Egypt vary, providing you with plenty of choices that suit your needs and budget.

Steps to Buy a Used Car

Buying a used car can be challenging, often accompanied by concerns about the substantial amount spent and the fear of making the wrong choice. Here are some steps that can facilitate the buying process:

  • Thorough Online Research: Begin by conducting detailed online research about the types of cars available in the market. Compare different models, prices, and other factors to get a general overview of the available options. Many specialized websites for buying and selling cars offer accurate information about various car types in the Egyptian market and their prices.
  • Find the Right Car: Look for a car that suits your needs and preferences. Consider factors such as size, whether a small car, a four-door sedan, or a large family-sized vehicle, as well as specific features and qualities you desire.

Here Are Some Tips When Buying a Used Car

  • Read the advertisement carefully and request clear pictures of the car. Don't rely solely on the description provided by the seller.
  • Ask for the car's maintenance records from the owner to review the performed maintenance and its schedule.
  • Have the car inspected at an authorized service center. This is one of the most crucial steps when purchasing any used vehicle.
  • Bring in a certified expert to inspect the engine's condition and essential car parts, in addition to conducting a comprehensive inspection to identify any issues.
  • Check the air conditioning, interior, and seats, and ensure there are no missing parts or damages.
  • Find out the car's production date and the mileage it has covered. Be extra cautious about the engine's performance, wheels, and other components, as well as the availability of spare parts in the market.
  • Inspect the overall condition of the car's body and check for rust, cracks, or signs of collisions.
  • Test drive the car, as it can reveal issues you may not be aware of, such as mechanical problems or discomfort during driving. If the engine feels underpowered, it might prompt you to reconsider your purchase decision and look for another car.
  • Finally, ensure you have all the ownership documents for the used car. After conducting a detailed inspection and assessing its condition, take note of the car's number and verify it at the nearest traffic authority and real estate office to confirm the validity of the documents.

Procedures and Steps Followed When Buying a Used Car:

  • Initial Sales Contract:

  • Where to Buy: Purchase it from one of the local libraries, especially those near the traffic department.

  • Purpose: Safeguard the initial rights of both the seller and the buyer.

  • Registered Contract in the Real Estate Registry:
    • Where to Buy: Obtain it exclusively from the real estate registry.
    • Purpose: Preserve the permanent rights of both the seller and the buyer, especially the buyer.

  • Car Sales Authorization:
    • Where to Buy: Purchase it from the real estate registry only.
    • Purpose: The authorization allows one party to sell the car to another party. This authorization can be repeated from one party to another in a chain, with a maximum of three authorizations. The final buyer should get the necessary approvals in these authorizations. The buyer must ensure:
      • The name on the authorization matches the name on the license.
      • If there are multiple authorizations, the names must match in all of them.

  • Car License:

    • The license serves as proof of ownership for the car. The buyer should ensure all the license details are accurate.
    • Ideally, the license should be valid, which can be verified by checking the inspection date on the license.
    • Match the seller's name to the name on the license (for owner's licenses).
    • Verify the car's type, model year, color, and engine capacity.
    • If the license is expired, the buyer has the right to request a "Certificate of Data" from the seller.

  • Legal Notes:

    • If the buyer intends to transfer the license under their name after the purchase, they must create a registered contract in the real estate registry.
    • If the purchase is made through authorization, the buyer should create a registered sales contract for themselves in the real estate registry.
    • If the buyer does not intend to transfer ownership and the license to their name at the traffic department after the purchase, they have two options:
    • Purchase through authorization from the seller.
    • Purchase with a registered contract without signing it as the buyer while retaining the ownership document for the car, whether it's a registered sales contract, authorization, or multiple authorizations until they decide to transfer ownership and license to themselves. It is essential to consider the license's expiration date before doing so.
