Surgery
- Polycelectomy involves removing cancerous polyps during a quick endoscopic procedure. Local resection refers to the surgical removal of cancerous tissue with a small margin of healthy tissue when the tumor is located on the inner surface of the rectum and has not invaded the rectal wall. Excision involves removing the cancerous portion of the rectum, along with adjacent healthy tissue and lymph nodes, especially when the cancer has invaded the rectal wall. Radiofrequency therapy uses a probe to generate heat that effectively destroys cancer cells and can be administered either percutaneously or through an abdominal incision. Cryosurgery is a technique that involves freezing abnormal tissue to induce its destruction. In advanced cancers where metastases have occurred to surrounding organs, a pelvic resection is performed, which involves removing the rectum, colon, and any affected organs such as the bladder, prostate, or cervix.
Radiation therapy
- Radiation therapy uses high-energy X-rays or other forms of radiation to destroy cancer cells or inhibit their growth. For rectal cancer, treatment may include external beam radiation therapy. This method uses a machine placed outside the body to direct radiation to the specific area affected by the cancer.
Chemotherapy
- Chemotherapy, commonly known as chemotherapy, uses drugs to stop cancer cells from multiplying. This is done either by destroying the cells or by preventing them from dividing.
Chemoradiation
- Chemoradiation combines chemotherapy and radiation therapy to enhance the effects of both treatments.
Targeted Therapy
- Targeted therapy uses drugs or other substances to identify and attack specific cancer cells. Dr. Ismail Shafik may suggest biomarker tests to help predict your response to certain targeted therapy drugs.
Immunotherapy
- Immunotherapy helps a person's immune system fight cancer. Dr. Ismail Shafik may suggest biomarker tests to help predict your response to certain immunotherapy drugs.
