ratio controller

- A ratio controller is an industrial control system designed to maintain a constant ratio between two variables—such as the air-to-fuel ratio in combustion systems or the ratio of reactants in chemical reactors. The system measures the "wild stream" (e.g., fuel) and adjusts the "controlled stream" (e.g., air) to ensure the relationship between them remains at the desired ratio. This mechanism enhances process stability and efficiency while minimizing errors caused by sudden fluctuations in load or operating conditions.

- One of the most prominent practical applications of the Ratio Controller is that it is used in boilers and furnaces to adjust the air-to-fuel ratio, ensuring complete combustion and reducing harmful emissions. It is also used in chemical reactors to maintain accurate ratios between input materials, which is essential to achieve product quality and avoid unwanted reactions. It is also used in mixing, distillation, and water treatment operations, as it helps in controlling precise proportions such as the ratio of chlorine to water to ensure effective sterilization.

- Despite its simplicity, this system faces some challenges such as delays in flow signals or difficulty maintaining the ratio under rapid load changes. Therefore it is often combined with other systems such as Cross-limiting Ratio Control or Cascade Control to ensure operational safety and process stability. These solutions prevent, for example, the fuel from coming before the air when demand increases, or the air coming before the fuel when it decreases, which maintains balance and prevents risks.

- The biggest advantage of the Ratio Controller is that it is considered one of the simplest forms of Feedforward Control, but it achieves significant benefits such as improving energy efficiency, reducing emissions, and ensuring product quality. It is therefore an essential tool in industries that rely on precise control of material proportions or flows, and is widely used in the fields of energy, chemistry, and industrial processing.
